The expansive ocean

THE TEXTURE OF THE SEA

Today it is silk,
Rippling gently,
Touching the body of the earth
With tender fingers.

I have seen it laid out
Smooth as satin,
Glossy as a god’s love
For life and mystery.

At times it has the regular
Roughness of corduroy;
Its even warps
Lapping each other to the shore.

It can be terrible as wool,
Consuming and buffeting
Itself in thick folds
Of cool warmth.

Cotton in a storm,
Linen hung out flapping,
Water laced with air,
Air with water.

"The Texture of the Sea" was first published in City Magic, 1987.  Another poem inspired by my time living off Biscayne Bay.
