One True Love 26
IX
Before I knew you,
I roof-top danced
Yelling obscenities for Christ.
Before I knew you,
My legs would not be still.
And when I knew you,
My knick-knack existence
Was gilded and jeweled.
Since . . .
The bitter paralysis,
The silent, dark numbness,
The one remembrance.
"IX, Before I knew you" was first published in Memento, 1976. The persona, who had previously been a lover of life, has become immobilized by oppressive memories.
